Climbing the rockface of SPSS

Had my first taste of SPSS.

I have no idea how to go about doing any of the test in there.

I guess the learning curve to use the program is pretty steep for me.

A steep as rock climbing.

Hopeful for a crash course that will make the learning of using the software easier for me.

Furniture Shopping.

Tables. All I see are tables.

Patterns. All I see are patterns on tables.

After reading some literature on Classroom Learning Environement, I think I can see some pattern in them.
1) A literature review on what has been done.
2) State the instrument that is used.
3) If you used a new instrument, there is a need to validate them.
4) Justify why you are using the instruments.
5) Give a brief description of the instruments that you are using.

Each instrument would have
a) scale measuring a certain construct prefearably linking to Moos' scheme of conceptualising human environment.
b) Description of scale
c) A Sample of items on each scale.
d Scoring system or Responses or Linkert scale.
All these are preferably displayed on a table.

6) More table....Factor Analysis table....*I have no idea how to interpret them*

7) Analysis of table * lost*
8) Conclusion.

Now I just need to know what is ANOVA, MANOVA...etc..

Tables...ANOVA...MANOVA...think its time for a trip to IKEA.

Reflection on Session 1 Part 2

I enjoyed reading the article on the concept of 'Ba'.

This article gave a snapshot of the different learning theories. Behaviourism, Cognitive Theory, Constructiviism, Cognitive Constructivism and Social Constructivism. I believed I studied this a long time ago as a trainee but it made no sense to me then. At least, after reading the article today, I sort of understood them. Perhaps I became smarter or wiser....or perhaps right now, I have the teaching experience to appreciate the concepts.

The idea of tacit and explicit knowledge is also intriging. I believe most experts in their field contain alot of tacit knowledge and because these knowledge are "in their head", this make the experts expert. They have knowledge that makes them valuable. However in an organisation, there is a drive to make the tacit explicit. SOPs and guidelines are mechanism by organisation to ensure that the tacti becomes explicit such that if the expert leave the organisation, their loss will not be felt that greatly.

I believe what I am doing now in the course is something like the SECI and the ESCIE.
There are readings that allow us for explicitation, socialisation in person and via e-platform, internalisation and externalisation when we have to do blogging and the wiki, and all the learning are combined together in the end.

On a side note, the diagrammatic depiction of ESCIE, does look like a figure eight or "Ba" in Mandarin.

Reflectingon my first session and reading.

Thought I signed up unwittingly for a wrong course. The title suggests Classroom Learning Environment but what I learnt was Wiki, google.doc, facebook and blogging. It was like a crash course on all the Web 2.0 tools that I have heard about but did not really have the time to venture. Glad to have the opportunity to get my hands dirty and explore the tools.

I guess to initiate to use these tools, I would need to build up my confidence in using it. Only after that, then perhaps I would like to learn how to teach my students to learn using them.

Things looks better after I read the readings......so maybe it is not just Web 2.0 stuff but the actual learning enviroment for my students...the Classroom learning Enviroment. Guess I am happy because I can see the possibility of using what is taught here to improve on my teaching. It is also useful for me to use theories that I gather here to guide newer colleagues in the area of classroom management. From my observations, teachers who usually have problem with classroom management usually either lack the pedagogy competencies or have not establish a conducive learning enviroment, For me it is easy because, I am *ahem* the DM :P. Think certain roles in the school has its privileges.

Lots of readings.....lots of instruments used.......would like to know how to create such robust instruments.......
